Successful Surgery

This has been one long day, but it turned out alright.  Devin and I got to the hospital around 8:00 this morning to spend some time with Charlie before his surgery.  Around 9:15 they tried to intubate him (put a tube down his throat so that the ventilator can breathe for him once they put him to sleep).  Charlie wasn’t too fond of this idea so they had to give him a sedative to relax him so that they could intubate him.  Around 10:15 they finally got him intubated and we were ready to make the trip from the NICU on the 5th floor to the O.R. on the 3rd floor.  This was such a long walk…and then we had to leave him which was not the best moment of the day.  This was at 10:35.  At 11:00 they called us in the waiting room and told us that he was asleep and they surgery was going well.  At 11:45 Dr. Camps came to the waiting room to tell us how the surgery went.  Everything went well and they even circumcised him while they were in there.  Thanks to my mom and Devin’s mom for sitting with us in the waiting room.  I finally got to see him around 12:00.  He just looked like he was sleeping – no pain.  The ventilator was giving him 15 breaths per minute.  He soon after started taking a few breaths on his own.  Around 1:40 I walked down the hall to feed Anna Claire.  At 2:05 I came back to find the respiratory thereapist, the nurse, and doctors around him.  My heart sank!  What did I find??  Charlie had pulled out his breathing tube!!  They were making sure he could breathe on his own.  Praise the Lord he could.  So, that’s where we are.  He is still getting IV fluids and has a nasal canula with 21% oxygen (like our room air).  They are giving him Tylenol for pain and hopefully he can start eating again tomorrow.  Thank you so much for all the prayers.  Here’s a picture of Charlie after surgery and a picture of Anna Claire (we couldn’t leave her out!)  2009_0427littleones046112009_0427littleones04621
